About Me

My name is Stuart Burgess.

I was warden at Runnymede and Ankerwycke in 1999-2004.  During my time there I was able to learn a great deal about the estate.  I undertook significant historical research into the site, and have continued this for the past 20 years.  I studied Ecology and Landscape Archaeology at the University of East Anglia, and also attained a Masters in Local and Regional History.  I presently work for Norfolk Museums Services in their Visitor Services Team.

Despite moving away from Runnymede, I still have a proud fondness of Ankerwycke. I try to visit every time I am passing, and I have been privileged to  recently be involved in the Runnymede explored project with The National Trust.

I hope this website enables visitors to understand the site in greater detail, and I have tried to share the estate's magic and mystery with you.

For the past 5  years I have been involved with Runnymede Explored, a Heritage Lottery Funded project.  As part of this 2 years of archaeological investigation was carried out.  In 2023 our dig was visited by Digging For Britain, and I had the pleasure of meeting Dr Alice Roberts.

Please feel free to get in touch.  I am able to deliver guided walks, illustrated talks as well as zoom talks if necessary.  Also, if you feel you would like to make any comments or feedback, I'd be happy to hear from you.
